CJOC Commendation Awards to WO Pouliot and Sgt Bedard

Hier, (2 février 2020) le GCmdt de la 2e Div a remis les mentions élogieuses ‘’ Du Commandement des opérations interarmées du Canada’’ aux Adj Pouliot (géomatique); et Sgt Bédard (sapeur de combat) du 5e RGC.


On 2 December 2020, Commander, 2nd Canadian Division, has awarded the Commander Joint Operations Command Commendation to WO Pouliot (geo) and Sgt Bedard (Cbt Engr) of 5e RGC. 

Roughly translated, WO Pouliot's commendation reads:

New Colonel Commandant Appointed for the Canadian Military Engineers

After six years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Military Engineers, BGen Steve Irwin (Ret'd) will transfer the duties of Colonel Commandant to MGen Dan Benjamin, effective 21 March 2021. The Change of Appointment ceremony will take place in accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines in effect at that time.

The CMEA welcomes General Benjamin and sends a heart felt thank you to General Irwin for his loyal and energetic service.

The Netherlands "Medal of Remembrance in Relation to the Liberation of Holland." Is Available to Veterans

Over the years, The Netherlands has struck several versions of their “Medal of Remembrance” to honour the soldiers who helped liberate their country during the Second World War. In 1995, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Holland, the Netherlands offered a "Thank you Canada" anniversary medal to the more than 20,000 Canadian veterans who came to Holland to celebrate this memorable occasion.

This year the volunteers at the Mapping and Charting Establishment will prepare over 160 gift packages to be sent to our Engineers serving overseas and in the far north. In addition to the usual gift items, this year the package will include a COVID face mask. This annual CMEA event honours those who serve during the holiday season away from family and home.

Help Ruth-Ann Live Beyond Cancer

Captain Ruth-Ann Beaudry (nee Schamuhn) graduated from RMC in 1999 and served as an engineer officer in 5 RGC before becoming a Medical Officer.

Three years ago, Ruth-Ann was diagnosed with an aggressive type of kidney cancer. The cancer continues to spread and she was medically released from Canadian Forces a few months ago. Unfortunately, there are no more publicly-funded treatment options available so she is seeking private options. 

76 Years On: Sapper Bravery and Sacrifice in the Battle of the Scheldt

Friday 2 October 2020 marks 76 years since the day the First Canadian Army launched the Battle of the Scheldt to unlock the shipping route to the port of Antwerp and open a vital supply route to support the Allied advance into Germany. Strong defences and the unique geography of the Scheldt Estuary made this one of the most difficult battlefields of the Second World War. Under Canadian leadership, Canadian, British and Polish troops advanced over a maze of narrow roads, canals, dykes and flooded lowlands.

D-Day Veteran Sgt Bill Ludlow (Ret'd) Celebrates 100th Birthday

On 13 September 2020, a well-known ex-member of 34 Combat Engineer Regiment, Sgt Bill Ludlow, celebrated his 100th birthday. Bill was a member of the 16th Field Company, RCE, from 1941 to 1945.  Bill is not only one of few living veterans of the Second World War to have served in the same unit as his father, but he also landed in Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. In recognition of his distinguished and dedicated service, the Regiment established the Ludlow Trophy in 1983 to honour his memory.
