1. THE MILITARY ENGINEERING BRANCH WAS SO NAMED DURING THE UNIFICATION PROCESS IN 1971. HOWEVER, PRIOR TO UNIFICATION, AND EVER SINCE, MEMBERS OF THE BRANCH HAVE SELF-IDENTIFIED BY ANOTHER NAME, THE CANADIAN MILITARY ENGINEERS (CME).

Written By: 2Lt Ovens 5 CDSB GAGETOWN - The theme of the capstone training activity for Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME) this year was “Strong Secure Engaged”, Canada’s new defence policy and the implications it will have on the military and the engineering branch specifically in the coming years. Approximately 200 people attended Exercise UBIQUE 2018 from February 14-15 at 5 CDSB Gagetown.

14 Construction Engineering Squadron members from Pictou and Bridgewater, Canadian Armed Forces veterans and stakeholders conduct maintenance and repair work on the HMCS Bonaventure Anchor Monument at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The monument is dedicated to CAF members who lost their lives at sea.

During 4 ESR’s deployment to Latvia on Op REASSURANCE, sappers had the opportunity to work with other nations who made up the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group. Canadians were invited to participate in a 5km obstacle course race for Spanish National Day on 10 October 2017 hosted by the Spanish Sappers. 3 members of 4 ESR participated: Cpl Deny Cassista (team lead for team 2), Spr Mark MacDougall and Spr Mathieu Lavoie (both on Team 1).  Not only did the race test their mettle but the conditions were not easy- cold and rainy.

A part of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus is to maintain the military status quo in order to prevent a recurrence of fighting and set the conditions for political progress. One of my tasks is to monitor the overall status and activity of military forces around the buffer zone.

Last June, the Royal Canadian Navy retrieved a collection of 200 unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) from an old shipwreck off the coast of British Columbia. Operation THIEPVAL was carried out by a team of 15 Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Clearance Divers, Port Inspection Divers, and support staff from the Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific). For four days, the team operated from the Yard Diving Tender SOOKE anchored near the wreck site for the duration of Operation.
