Our Last Post feature aims to notify colleagues of the passing of a comrade and to publish a short summary of their career and accomplishments to honour those who have served our country who died after 1 January 2000. As we receive news of the death of a member of the CME Family, we post an obituary along with funeral details and family wishes. We have done our best to ensure their completeness, with a focus on each person's service records and notable accomplishments.

Arthur “Art” W. Dillon

We regret to advise of the death of Arthur “Art” W. Dillon peacefully in Vancouver, BC on 16 January 2007 at the age of 87.

Art was born in Saskatchewan.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1943 – 1945. Prior to joining the Army he worked in the gold mines in Geraldton, ON. After the war he moved to Langley, BC and operated a poultry farm but took early retirement. He was an accomplished woodworker and when he was not travelling the world he practised his hobby and donated many of his creations to various charity organizations. 

There will be a private family service. Donations may be made to the BC and Yukon Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Diabetes Association.  {gdOct2016kh}

Arthur “Art” W. Dillon

Stanley Alexander “Stan” Blabey

We regret to advise of the death of Stanley Alexander “Stan” Blabey of Rosedale, BC on 26 December 2006 at the age of 92 years.

Stan was born in Hanley, SK and grew up on the family farm in Manitoba.  In 1941, when he was 27, he joined the Army in Ontario and after basic training was sent to Chilliwack as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers.  During training, he was seriously injured in a demolition accident but had recovered enough by 1944 that he joined the 16th Field Company, RCE in England just before the Normandy invasion.  Stan landed on D-Day and fought with his unit for two months before sustaining a back injury during a bridge build.  He recuperated in England for several months and was then shipped back to Canada. 

After the war, Stan worked as a milk tester for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association in Chilliwack.  Stan returned to school in 1958 at the age of 44 and completed Grade IX through to his BA by the time he was 50 years old.  He spent the balance of his working years as accountant/treasurer and teacher at Kingsway College in Oshawa, ON. Though Stan was born a hundred miles from the nearest tree, he spent his last years back in the beautiful Fraser Valley surrounded by his own massive maples and spruces.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on 2 January at 10:00 a.m. with interment in the Chilliwack Cemeteries. {dcmar17gd}[zpp]

Stanley Alexander “Stan” Blabey

Spr Maurice Fredette (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Maurice Fredette (Ret’d) of Sturgeon Falls, ON  at the age of 93 years on 15 December 2006 .

Maurice was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Sturgeon Falls Branch #225.  {dcJan19gd} [zsd, zcc, zbd, zpp]

L/Sgt Herbert “Bert” Saunders (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the passing of Lance-Sergeant Herbert “Bert” Saunders (Ret’d) peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC on 14 December 2006 at the age of 90 years.

Bert was born in Victoria and lived most of his adult life there. In 1940, at 24, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in Victoria and trained locally for a few months.  Offered the opportunity to take trades training in Vancouver, be was transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers and qualified as a Group 'C' Plumber.  He continued his engineer training in Dundurn SK and later in England.

Bert served in 4th Canadian Armoured Division Engineers, first in the 8th Field Squadron through France and into Belgium, and there, promoted and transferred to the 9th Field Squadron as a Reconnaissance Sergeant in October 1944.  During the Battle of the Scheldt in Holland, he lost his right foot to an antipersonnel mine on 30 October. He convalesced in Belgium and England before returning to Canada in March 1945. After a short stay in Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver, he was discharged in April. Three years after he left Canada he resumed civilian life with an artificial leg.

Having apprenticed in the nursery and greenhouse business prior to the war, Bert established his own greenhouse business in Victoria which he operated for the next 29 years. He retired from greenhousing in 1974 and moved to French Creek BC, returning to Victoria in 1997 to be closer to his family. He was an active member of the War Amputees Association in Victoria and the Island Growers Association. On his 90th birthday, his family published a book titled “MY STORY: The War Years” about his wartime experiences.

A memorial service will be held at First Memorial Chapel in Royal Oak on 30 December. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association's Ian Erskin Fund providing housing for people with mental illness or a favourite cause. {gdSep2015kh}

Lance-Sergeant Herbert “Bert” Saunders (Ret’d)

Norman Vaughn Hoeg

We regret to advise of the death of Norman Vaughn Hoeg of Bible Hill, NS in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, NS on 9 December 2006 at the age of 83 years.

Norman was born in Sackville, NB and was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the 11th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 until 1946 in Canada, Great Britain and after D-Day, in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.  Norman was a Past President, Past Secretary and Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Colchester Branch # 26. He was awarded the Legion Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf.

Norman was a bandsman for many years who played in various bands throughout Nova Scotia including Amherst, Joggins and Truro as well as Moncton, NB.  He was a past president of the Truro Concert Band and helped start the Legion Lyrics and Musical Vets.  He was an Honorary Member of the Truro Fire Brigade and served as Ward 3 Lieutenant.  He was a member of Fellowship Lodge No. 112, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.  He moved to Truro in 1950 became the owner of a branch of Nelson's Dry Cleaners. 

Visitation will be held on 11 December 7-9 PM in Mattatall Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro, where a Legion tribute service will be held on 12 December at 2 PM followed by funeral service at 3 PM.   A reception will follow in the Royal Canadian Legion Lounge. Burial will be held at a later date in Crossroads Cemetery, Valley.  Donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Truro, or Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 26, Truro.  {gdMar2017dc}

Norman Vaughn Hoeg

S/Sgt Patrick “Paddy” Denis Beechinor (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant Patrick “Paddy” Beechinor (Ret’d) at home in Crescent Beach BC, after a long illness, on 6 December 2006 in his 81st  year.

Paddy was born in Moose Jaw SK.  He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943.  After the war, he re-enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman before moving to the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps.  In 1947 he transferred to the Army Survey Establishment as a Lithographer where he served for the next twenty years.  After his retirement from the Army, Paddy moved to Vancouver before living in Blaine, Washington where he worked as a clerk and warehouseman.  He eventually moved back to Canada and retired in Crescent Beach BC.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, 12268 Beecher Avenue, Crescent Beach at 11 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2006 by Paddy's brother, Father Ron Beechinor.   {gdOct2016kh}

L/Cpl William Wallen (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lance-Corporal William Wallen (Ret'd) of Oshawa ON on 1 December 2006.

William was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Korean War serving with 3 Field Squadron during the period March 1954 – November 1954. After leaving the Army, he returned to Cobourg, his home town.  He worked as a sheet metal worker.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Peter Calles (Ret’d) at the Wainwright Auxiliary Hospital in Wainwright, AB on 1 December 2006 at the age of 90 years.

WOII Andrew Mountain “Andy” Hall (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of  Warrant Officer Class II Andrew Mountain “Andy” Hall (Ret’d) of Edmonton AB on 28 November 2006 at the age of 97 years.

Andy was born in Quebec QC. His family lived in Danville QC and Vermont before moving west to Moose Jaw when he was a teenager. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers on 6 September 1939 and left for England in June of 1940. He fought through Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany serving as Company Sergeant Major in the 34th Field Company. Andy returned to Edmonton after the war and went to work for Imperial Oil.

The family will have a small, private memorial service on Saturday, December 9, 2006. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Andy lived a long life and lived life to the fullest. Serenity Funeral Service, 5311 - 91 Street, 450-0101.

Harry Raymond Dean

We regret to advise of the death of Harry Raymond Dean of Oromocto NB at the Veteran’s Health Center in Fredericton NB on 25 November 2006.

Harry was born in Saint John NB. He was a veteran of the Second World War and Korea. He served as a Gunner, a Sapper and a member of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Retired Sappers Association, the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps Association and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93 in Oromocto.

Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home on 28 November from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and from 7:00 until 9:00 PM. The Royal Canadian Legion will hold a tribute service at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on 29 November at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to Hip Hip Hooray (Canadian Orthopedic Foundation) or to the Alzheimer Society. 
 

Harry Raymond Dean

Lt-Col Robert “Bob” R. Buckley, CD, BSc., MBA, PEng (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Bob” R. Buckley, CD, BSc., MBA, PEng (Ret'd) peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, SK on 22 November 2006 at the age of 82 years.

Bob served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and commanded 3rd Field Squadron in Esquimalt, BC from 1956-1957.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Nutana Branch #362 in Saskatoon.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on 28 November at 3:00 PM at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 4th Ave. & 25th St., followed by a reception for family and friends at the W.A. We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Lyle John Blanchette (Ret’d) peacefully in Victoria, BC at the Victoria General Hospital on 15 November 2006 in his 84th year.

Lyle was born and lived in Richmond, BC.  He was a Second World War veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Richmond Branch #291.

Lyle’s funeral was held in the spring of 2007 in his home town of Richmond.  Visitation was held at the Cass Funeral Home in Richmond, QC on 21 May followed by a graveside service in St-Anne's Cemetery the following day.  {dcFeb2017gd} [zpp, zsd, zcc]

Spr John Grant MacLeod (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John Grant MacLeod (Ret’d) of Glace Bay, NS at home on 30 November 2006 at the age of 85 years.

John was born in Donkin, NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  When he returned from overseas, John went to work in the coal mines and spent 40 years as an underground miner.  John was a Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion, John Bernard Croak, V.C., Branch 003, Glace Bay. He was a former member of the Donkin Citizens Brass Band and a former member of the Epworth United Church choir.

Stewart McMillan Gray

We regret to advise of the death of Stewart McMillan Gray peacefully at the Concordia General Hospital in Winnipeg MB on 3 November 2006 at the age of 83.

Stewart was born in Portage La Prairie MB and spent his childhood on the nearby family farm.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the South Alberta Regiment in the United Kingdom and on the Continent.  After demobilization, he moved to Winnipeg and went to work for the Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg, Base Construction Engineer as a roads and grounds engineer.  He served there for the next 36 years.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper James Thomas "Jim" Williams (Ret’d) of Halifax, NS on 29 October 2006 in the New Halifax Infirmary at the age of 87 years.

Jim was born in Sydney, NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the 1st Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #152, Spryfield, NS.

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Wilbur Martin "Bill" Doyle (Ret’d) of Saint John, NB on 26 October 2006 at the age of 75 years.

Bill was born in Saint John. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and, after leaving the Army, worked as a welder at Saint John Shipbuilding.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Lancaster, NB Branch #69.

Corporal Wilbur Martin "Bill" Doyle (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Brian McKenna (Ret’d) at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, in Edmonton AB on 24 October 2006 at the age of 86.

Brian was born in Cookstown, Northern Ireland and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1927.  He was a WW II veteran who enlisted in the Canadian Army in July 1941, trained in Hamilton ON and Camp Petawawa ON before shipping to England were he joined the 6th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers of the 3rd Division.  He landed in Normandy on D-Day Plus 1 and fought with the Sappers through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.  He was repatriated to Canada after the war and released in October 1945.

Brian was a member of the Sappers Club of Edmonton, Royal Canadian Legion Kingsway Branch #175 in Edmonton and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (The Elks).

A prayers service will take place on 29 October 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 - 111 Avenue, Edmonton.   A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on 30 October at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 13131 - 86 Street, Edmonton.  Donations may be made to the Alberta Lung Association, P.O. Spr Nicola “Nick” Brdar (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Nicola “Nick” Brdar (Ret’d) on 22 October 2006 in Elliot Lake, ON at the age of 84 years.

Nick was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #561 in Elliot Lake.

Gordon Francis Kennedy

We regret to advise of the death of Gordon Francis Kennedy in Sault Ste. Marie, ON at the F.J. Davey Home on 14 October 2006 at the age of 92 years.

Gordon was born in Sault Ste. Marie and was a veteran of the Second World War.  He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Engineers. He was discharged in 1946. Gordon was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Visitation will take place at the Arthur Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie on 16 October and will include a Legion memorial service.   A funeral mass will be celebrated in the Precious Blood Cathedral on 17 October.  {dcNov2017gd} [zcc, zsp]

Gordon Francis Kennedy

Wylie G. MacLellan

We regret to advise of the death of Wylie G. MacLellan of Economy NS on 4 October 2006 in his 82nd year.

Wylie was a lifelong resident of Economy, only leaving the town to serve in the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War.  He saw action in Belgium and Holland, and as part of the occupation force in Germany. After the war, Wylie returned to his farm that stretched from the shore of the Minas Basin through to the Cobequid Hills. He initially raised a dairy herd, but later switched to raising beef cattle.  He as quite active in the community.  He was a member of the United Church, the Economy Fire Brigade and the Cobequid Branch #72 of the Royal Canadian Legion where he had recently received his 60-year pin.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Economy United Church on 7 October 2006 at 2:00 PM and burial will follow in the Economy Cemetery. The family would appreciate donations in Wylie’s memory be directed to the SPCA, the Economy United Church any charity of one’s choice.

Joseph Paul Donat “Don” Lalonde

We regret to advise of the death of Joseph Paul Donat “Don” Lalonde in Calgary, AB on 27 September 2006 at the age of 92 years.

Donat was born in the French-speaking village of St. Brieux, SK.  He was a WW II veteran who served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 – 1946.  After demobilisation, he worked at various jobs until in 1963, he started moving trailers for ATCO; a job he did for more than twenty years. Don retired from ATCO in 1986 and bought a pickup truck and kept busy by doing odd jobs, especially working in the bush.

A Service will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home on 2October at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at the Field of Honour, Mountain View Memorial Gardens.  Donations may be made to the Carewest Colonel Belcher, c/o Calgary Health Trust, 800 - 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary. 

Joseph Paul Donat “Don” Lalonde

Spr Frederick G. “Fred” Wagg (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Frederick G. “Fred” Wagg (Ret’d) of Guelph, ON on 26 September 2006 at the age of 84 years.

Fred was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Col. John McCrae Memorial Branch in Guelph.

A memorial tree was planted in 2006 for Fred in the Wall-Custance Dedication Grove at The Arboretum of the University of Guelph. {dcMar17}[zsd, zcc, zpp]

Capt Malvern “Mal” Leslie Davies (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Malvern “Mal” Leslie Davies (Ret’d) at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary AB on 24 September 2006 on his 85th birthday.

Malvern was born in Winnipeg MB but grew up in Calgary where he attended Western Canada High School.  He then attended the Royal Military College in Kingston ON from August 1940 to July 1942--the last war class.  He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and did his initial training at the Engineer Training Centre at Chilliwack BC.  He proceeded to England where he continued his training at the Engineering Holding Unit at Cove, Hampshire.  Mal landed in Normandy on D-Day and fought across France, Holland and Germany.

After the war, Mal returned to Calgary and completed his engineering degree at the University of Alberta.  He then joined the family-owned Valley Gas Company in the Turner Valley AB and was President for many years.  Mal was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 65 years.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 240 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary on 27 September.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Calgary & District Unit Office.  {gdSep2016kh}

Captain Malvern “Mal” Leslie Davies (Ret’d)

Bernard Tremaine “Bunny” Coolen

We regret to advise of the death of Bernard Tremaine “Bunny” Coolen at the Victoria General Hospital in Victoria BC on 17 September 2006 at the age of 86 years.

Bunny was born in Fox Point, NS and served overseas for five years during the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a heavy equipment operator.  After demobilization he put his skills to good use building highways, clearing orchards and digging many building foundations. His next career was as a high-pressure welder where he worked for many years as a boilermaker with Her Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard in Halifax, NS.

Bunny retired in 1988 and relocated to the Comox Valley in BC.  He was a member of the d'Esterre House Seniors’ Centre in Comox as well as a 60-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion.  His last Legion Branch was Branch #160 in Comox.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Piercy’s Funeral Home, 440 England Avenue, Courtenay, BC on 22 September at 2:00 PM.  Donations may be sent to the “Make a Wish Foundation” or to a charity of one’s choice. {dcOct2017gd}[zsd, zpp]

Earl Charles LeLacheur

We regret to advise of the death of Earl Charles LeLacheur on 15 September 2006, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, NS at the age of 72 years.

Earl was born in Port Hawkesbury, NS. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict when he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After leaving the Army he went to work for the Port Hawkesbury Marine Railway.

Visitation will be held on 17 September in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM 18 September in St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury, with burial in Southbrook Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. {dcMay2017gd}[zsd, zpp]

Thomas Cowley

We regret to advise of the death of Thomas Crowley on 2 September 2006.

Tom was born in North Vancouver in 1921 and joined the Canadian Army in 1940. He served in Canada and Alaska until 1942 when he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and was sent to England. In England he was transferred to No 1 Railroad Operating Company, RCE and became a locomotive Fireman/Engineer.

No 1 Railway Operating Group included both diesel and steam crews and trained and operated on both military and civil railway lines in England until it moved to the Continent to support the Allied advance after D-Day. They landed in France on 2 September and its trains were ready to roll within a week. The trains carried troops, guns, Bailey Bridge equipment, ammunition and supplies as close to the Front as possible throughout France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Some of the railroad equipment that they used was locally seized, salvaged and repaired and Tom claims to have helped commandeer what was then the largest locomotive in the world.

After the war Tom returned to Canada and settled in British Columbia. He was a 26-year member of the Legion in Williams Lake, Revelstoke, Sicamous, Creston, and Vernon.

Robert “Bob” Chester Barkhouse

We regret to advise of the death of Robert “Bob” Chester Barkhouse of New Minas, NS in the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, NS on 29 August 2006 at the age of 89 years.

Bob was born in Medford, NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After demobilization, he returned home to the Kentville area and spent his entire life working in farming throughout the Annapolis Valley.  Bob was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch #69 in Berwick, and Habitant Branch #73 in Canning, NS.

Visitation will take place at the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Avenue, Kentville from 7:00 -9:00 PM on 31 August with Royal Canadian Legion Habitant Branch #73 holding their veteran’s service at 7:00 PM. Roger Arthur Weicker

We regret to advise of the death of Roger Arthur Weicker in Victoria, BC on 23 August 2006 at the age of 89.

Roger was born in Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers for four years, first as an instructor at the A6 Canadian Engineer Training Centre in Chilliwack, BC before serving overseas in Holland.

Roger was an electrician by trade and practised for over 50 years.  He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Father Brabant Assembly, in Victoria serving in all capacities over the years.  He also provided devoted service to his parish community at Sacred Heart Church in Victoria.

Prayers will be offered in McCall Brothers Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, on 27 August at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, 4040 Nelthorpe Street on 28 August at 3:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 831 Yates Street, Victoria, BC.  Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.  {gdNov2016kh}

Cpl Gerald Patrick "Gerry" Hagan, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Gerald Patrick "Gerry" Hagan, CD (Ret'd) on 18 August 2006 in Edmonton AB at age 44 from a work- related illness .

Born in Edmonton AB, at the age of 17 Gerry decided to join the Canadian Forces in 1979. He had a lifelong passion for aviation but did not meet the visual requirements of a CF Pilot so he chose to be a firefighter with the Canadian Forces Fire Service.  During his career, Gerry was posted to CF bases in Germany, Cold Lake, Moose Jaw, and Edmonton, and aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships in Halifax and Victoria. He also deployed to Bosnia with Canada’s contribution to the NATO peacekeeping mission.

Gerry had a passion for aviation and not only attended numerous air shows but also worked as a volunteer for the Alberta Aviation Museum where he served as its Vice President. Gerry also gave freely of his time to the Edmonton Firefighter’s Burn Treatment Society and spent countless hours raising funds for those who have suffered tragic fire injuries.

Shortly after retiring from the CF Fire Service and going to work for Suncor, Gerry was diagnosed with a work-related cancer. He bore his illness with courage, strength and dignity and fought this disease right to the end. Cpl Gerald Patrick Hagan is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Edmonton. {khAug2020}

Frank St. Germain

We regret to advise of the death of Frank St. Germain peacefully at home on 17 August 2006 at the age of 82.

Frank was a veteran of WW II having served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1941 – 1945.

Visitation to be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod St. Ottawa on 20 August with funeral services to be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 210 Wilbrod St. on 21 August. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

We regret to advise the death of Garnet E. Elmgren at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, in Vernon BC on 7 August 2006 at the age of 81 years.

Garnet was born in Herchel, SK.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #81 in Vernon, the Lions and the Eagles.  He also was on the board of directors for Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Stanley B. Shortt (Ret’d) on 28 July 2006 in Simcoe County, ON at the age of 84 years.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Wilfred A Chartier, CD (Ret’d) of Paris ON on 18 July 2006 at the age of 84 years.

Wilfred was born in Kiamika Antoine-Labelle QC. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Permanent Force with the Royal Canadian Engineers after the war.

Sgt Michel John “Mike” Boucher, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Michel John “Mike” Boucher (Ret’d) suddenly on 22 June 2006 in his 50th year while canoeing in Nahanni National Park.

Mike joined the Canadian Forces in 1975 as a Field Engineer and was stationed with 22 Field Squadron at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, NB. In 1978 he remustered to the Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa, ON where he qualified as a Topographic Surveyor and served the remainder of his career. Mike deployed to the Arctic on three separate survey projects. He retired from the Canadian Forces as a sergeant in 1987 but continued with the unit as a civilian where he worked for many years in the classified mapping section, then as supervisor of the Resource Centre, and finally as an Operations Planner.

A memorial service will be held on 5 July 2006 at the Hellenic Centre, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, ON. Donations to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society's Nahanni National Park Expansion Project would be appreciated.

Clayton Elliott “Mac” McNeely

We regret to advise of the death of Clayton Elliott “Mac” McNeely of Keene ON in his 84th year on 20 June 2006.

Mac was born in Carleton Place ON and lived in that area for most of his life. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving for five years in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

A private family interment will take place following cremation at Westwood Community Cemetery. Friends may call at Keene United Church in Keene on 23 June from 1:00 PM for a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM. Stanley was born in Newton, MA, USA and moved with his parents to Margaree, NS at a young age.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1943-1946.  After the war Stanley made his home in Massachusetts and later in Manchester, NH, USA where he worked as a mechanic.

John Albert “Bert” Hickey

We regret to advise of the death of John Albert “Bert” Hickey of Hampton NB on 3 June 2006 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

John was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of both the Second World War and the Korean War. He served for 26 years including a posting with the 1st Airborne Field Troop in Calgary AB. He also served a tour in UNEF in Egypt.

Bert was a heavy equipment operator at Exhibition Park and was Track and Grounds Supervisor. Bert was a Life Member of Hampton Branch 28, Royal Canadian Legion, where was Sergeant of Arms for many years. He was a member of Hampton Seniors Resource Centre.

Bert is resting at Reid's Funeral Home in Hampton. The Funeral will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Reid's Funeral Home with interment in Hampton Rural Cemetery. Memorials to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated. Visiting from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM Monday. A Legion tribute will be held Monday, 6:45 PM at the funeral home. Sgt Mervin George Durham, MM (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Mervin George Durham on 26 May 2006 in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 84 years.

Mervin joined the Canadian Army in 1939 at the age of 17 years. He was a veteran of the Second World War and, while serving in the 9th Field Squadron, was awarded the Military Medal for his actions during the Battle of Kapelsche Veer on the River Maas in Holland. 

Following the war, Mervin pursued a career in the sales field until he retired and moved to Sturgis, SK in 1978. After 12 years, he and his wife moved to Saskatoon. Mervin was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63 in Saskatoon.

A vigil for Mervin will be held on 29 May 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the following day at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in  Saskatoon. Rite of Committal will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery's Field of Honour. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada would be appreciated. CWO Alfred “Fred” John Mandoli, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Alfred “Fred” John Mandoli, CD (Ret’d) suddenly at home in Ottawa ON, on 16 May 2006 at the age of 67.

Fred was born in Trail BC and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers as a 4th Intake Sapper Apprentice in June 1955. After an initial posting as a Field Engineer in 4 Field Squadron in Germany, Fred remustered to Topographical Surveyor in 1961. During 32-year career with the Army Survey Establishment/Mapping and Charting Establishment, he served in just about every capacity open to him. He attended the University of New Brunswick in 1970-71 where he completed the Photogrammetry Course. In 1974 he participated in the Arctic Doppler Survey with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources and followed this with an exchange posting with the Royal Engineers in England 1975-77 as the Squadron Sergeant Major, Air Survey Troop.

Promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in 1983, Fred was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of Mapping and Charting Establishment in June 1992, a position he held until his retirement in August 1993 after a full 37 year career.Fred was a long-time active volunteer and supporter of the Special Olympics.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 194 Fourth Avenue, Ottawa on 20 May. Fred's ashes will be scattered over the family’s lakeside property. {gdFeb2016kh}

Spr Armand J. Caouette (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Armand J. Caouette (Ret’d) of Arborfield, SK on 6 May 2006 in his 95th year.

Armand was born in Arborfield.  He enlisted in the Canadian Army in July 1941 and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers with the 1st Field Company in Canada, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.  On returning from Europe, he volunteered for the Pacific Force but the war ended and he was discharged in  November 1945.  Along with his campaign medals, Armand received the “Thank You Canada” Medal from the Netherlands government. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Arborfield Branch #211 and received his 60-year pin in 2005.

William 'Bill' George Warnock

We regret to advise of the death of William 'Bill' George Warnock on 2 May 2006 at South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Chesley, ON in his 83rd year.

Bill was born in Southampton, ON in 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in May 1942 but transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in Canada and England during World War II. He was discharged in June 1945.

William was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for fifty years.

William 'Bill' George Warnock

MCpl Richard “Rick” Kyle Chisholm, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Corporal Richard “Rick” Kyle Chisholm, CD (Ret’d) unexpectedly at the Quinte Health Care-Belleville General Hospital, Belleville, ON on 25 April 2006 at the age of 48.

Rick joined the Navy in 1980 but transferred to the Canadian Military Engineers in 1984 when he became an Electrical Generating Systems Technician at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, ON.  He completed tours at Canadian Forces Station Alert, NU and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights before being posted to CFB Greenwood, NS in 1991.  While in Greenwood, he once again deployed to the Golan Heights.  Upon his return from the Middle East, he was posted back to CFB Trenton where he was a member of the Mobile Repair Team and, later, with 8 Aircraft Communications and Control Squadron.  During this time He completed a second tour of CFS Alert.  Rick retired in July 2003.

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Robert William "Bob" Tuttle, CD (Ret’d) on 11 April 2006 at home in Carleton Place, ON in his 81st year. 

Bob was born in Pugwash, NS.  He joined the Canadian Army Survey Establishment in 1948 participating in many survey jobs to such diverse locations as Sheldon Lake, ON; Loss River and Nahanni Bute, NT; and Deadhorse Creek. ON.  In 1954 he was part of the early helicopter triangulation of British Columbia and had also worked in the Canadian north at Churchill, MB; Eskimo Point, NU; and Ellesmere Island, NU.  Bob was promoted to Master Warrant Officer in 1969 and retired from the Mapping and Charting Establishment in August 1977 after 30 years military service.

Visitation will be at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on 15 April from 10:00 AM until time of service to be held in the chapel at 12:00 noon.  Interment will take place in Wallace Bay, N.S. at a later date.  Donations may be made to the Carleton Place Hospital Foundation or the Wallace Bay Cemetery Association. {gdApr2017dc} [zsp]

We regret to advise of the death of P “Tony” Aston on 2 April 2006 at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton ON.

Tony was born in Wales in a small village, Nantgarw, near Pontypridd. He came to Canada at age seven with his family and settled in North Hatley QC. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1940-1945.

On returning from the war Tony settled in Montreal with his English war bride, working for Northern Bell. He moved to Brampton ON in 1962, working for Nortel as a department manager and retired after 32 years.

A Funeral Service will be held at Saint Joseph of Nazareth Anglican Church in Brampton where he was an active member since 1963 on 5 April at 10:00 AM with visitation one hour prior.  Cremation will follow at Meadowvale Cemetery. RCE Band Sergeant Major, Edward Gerard Gibney

We regret to advise of the death of RCE Band Sergeant Major, Edward Gerard Gibney (Ret’d) peacefully on 28 March 2006 at the age of 90.

Edward bandmaster in WW II with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry before transferring to the Royal Canadian Engineers Band while in England.  The Band moved to Italy where it entertained not only the troops but the liberated Italian population.  The band next moved to The Netherlands where it was involved in post-war celebrations as part of the Canadian Army Occupation Force.  It is here that Edward became the band’s first Canadian band master before returning to England where the band was disbanded in 1946.

After his repatriation, Edward taught music his entire working life until his retirement in 1970.  He taught privately in Port Alberni BC; formed his own 17 piece band; taught in local schools; organized musical shows and choirs; founded the Alberni Valley Choral Society; conducted the Nanaimo City Concert Band (the oldest concert band in Canada); and taught at Lord Byng Secondary School in Vancouver.  He wrote ’Prelude To Brass Playing’ in collaboration with legendary trumpet virtuoso Rafael Mendez.  Edward was an active volunteer for the Save The Children Fund.

Harry Gordon Apland

We regret to advise of the death of Harry Gordon Apland in Dryden ON on 17 March 2006 at the age of 84 years.

Harry was born in Marchwell SK and was a veteran of the Second World War.  He joined the Canadian Army in May 1942 and served in the 22nd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.  He went to England in 1943 and served in Normandy and the Low Countries. Harry returned to Canada in September 1945 and was discharged in November. His Scottish wife followed in June 1946. They moved to Mayerthorpe AB where Harry farmed until 1963 when the family moved to Dryden and where Harry worked for the Department of Highways until retiring. Harry was a member of the Oxbrift Legion.

The Oxdrift Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a Veteran’s Memorial Service on Wednesday 22 March at 2:00 PM in the Moffat Chapel. Interment of ashes will take place in the Dryden Cemetery. Harry Gordon Apland

Cpl Leslie “Pop” Arnold, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Leslie “Pop” Arnold, CD (Ret’d) of Chilliwack, BC on 4 March 2006 at the age of 82.  

Pop was born in Yorkshire, England and immigrated to Canada at the age of three. He grew up in Regina, SK where, at age 17, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served for four years with the 23rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. He participated in Operation BERLIN, the 25/26 September 1944 evacuation of the Allied Airborne troops at Arnhem after Operation MARKET GARDEN.  

After the war, Pop moved to Vancouver and later re-enlisted in the Army, this time in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps.  He served in Whitehorse YT, Soest Germany, and finally to Chilliwack where eventually retired.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 in Chilliwack.

Pop was an avid sportsman and was actively involved in coaching baseball and hockey.  He was a trainer for the Chilliwack Jets and Chilliwack Bruins hockey teams for a number of years.

A Memorial service will be held on 10 March at Henderson’s Funeral Home in Chilliwack.  Donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital or any charity of one’s choice.  {dcJan2017gd} [zcc,zsp]
