Last July, our Colonel Commandant, MGen Daniel Benjamin, unveiled a monument to the efforts of the Royal Canadian Engineers during Operation HUSKY. To refresh your memory, recall that during the night of 21 / 22 July 1943, the 3rd Field Company, in support of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade's attack on the hilltop town of Leonforte, built the first Bailey Bridge of the war under fire and ensured a Canadian victory.
A Bailey Bridge panel, memorial plaque, interpretive panels and individual markers along the 325-kilometre walk were erected through to efforts of many parties, but in particular, The Walk for Remembrance & Peace, a not-for-profit initiative of Canadians, Italians, and other nationals as a reminder of the price of peace.
Mr. Steve Gregory, MSM, past- Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, led the effort to re-claim Canadian history by tracing the steps of the 1st Canadian Division in Sicily and honouring the souls of those who fought and those who died laying the foundation for peace and democracy in Sicily. In recognition of the role he played in recognizing the feat of arms at Leonforte and the Sappers who died during the Sicilian Campaign, Mr. Gregory was inducted as a Pukka Sapper and awarded a CMEA Commendation by our Colonel Commandant.
