Leading the Way (Through Technology) - Sappers Graduate from the Army Technical Staff Program

Congratulations to this year’s graduates of the Army Technical Staff Officer (ATSO) and Army Technical Warrant Officers (ATWO) program: Capt Christopher Mack, MWO Tim Martin, and WO Nicolas Pruneau.

The ATSO/ATWO is a year-long program run by the Royal Military College (RMC) Department of Applied Military Sciences (AMS) in Kingston, ON. Students participate in a demanding yet rewarding year of studies on defence technology including core sciences, applied sciences, and defence management. They also get the opportunity to participate in field study visits to defence team and industry leading organizations across North America and abroad.

As a key part of the program, each student must conduct a research project that addresses a real technological challenge facing the Canadian Army. Applying what is learned throughout the program and collaborating with project sponsors and stakeholders, students gain valuable experience with project management and coordination, further preparing them for future technical employment. Their tremendous effort culminates with the presentation of their research at the AMS Symposium, held during the ATSO/ATWO graduation week each June.

All newly qualified students are posted into capability development positions across the Canadian Army. They will work on research and development, equipment trials, procurement, life-cycle management, or other highly technical roles in support of current and future defence equipment.

If you are interested in the ATSO/ATWO programs, watch for the upcoming fall CANFORGEN announcing application details, and review CAO 24-30: Canadian Army Technical Programs.
