We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Clayton "George" Maidment of Clarksville NS, at the Hants Community Hospital on 14 December 2023 at age 74.
George grew up in Catalina NL and moved with his family to Happy Valley Goose Bay NL at the age of 12. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1966 and was an original member of the East Coast Gun Run in the International Tattoo, which travelled across Canada during the 1967 Centennial Year.
George served on Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships Bonaventure and the Cape Scott, sailing to England, Denmark and Porta Rico, to name a few destinations.
During his time in the military, George wore several hats, including those of Cook, Military Policeman at Canadian Forces Base Windsor Park, and Military Firefighter at CFB Shearwater. George then became a Firefighter with the Department of Defence Fire Service and rose to Platoon Chief at HMCS Dockyard, NAD, Magazine Hill and Mill Cove. He was also a volunteer firefighter in West Gore.
George’s passion was fishing and hunting. His annual fishing trips to Mooseland, NS, and numerous fishing trips to Northern Labrador, as well as a few hunting trips in NS and NL. He was a member of the Mount Uniacke Legion #165 and loved playing pool, winning numerous titles and awards. George also played in various hockey leagues in Shearwater, Citadel Inn, Black Bear Tavern, Midland-Scotch Village, and darts in Gore.
