During the August Long weekend, the Edmonton Heritage Festival celebrated cultural diversity, cultural awareness, and displayed community involvement. Crowds eager to experience global cultures through food, music, and art attended the festival. MCpl Stephen Chang, 1PPCLI, contributed by volunteering their time and efforts and assisting with various festival operations, from setting up booths to managing visitor flow. “I am incredibly proud to be here with the Edmonton Taiwanese Association (ETA), sharing the vibrant tapestry of my Taiwanese heritage with this wonderful city.” MCpl Stephen Chang commented during the heritage festival. Under the guidance of the ETA, their participation ensured the smooth running of the event and exemplified their support for enriching the local community.
On the other hand, Cher-Ann Chai, RPOU-W Information Management Officer, visited the Edmonton Heritage Festival, and their enthusiasm for the event was palpable. Cher-Ann remarked, "The Edmonton Heritage Festival is absolutely fantastic! This festival truly captures the essence of what makes our community so unique and welcoming. I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience this cultural richness.” Their words reflect the appreciation and joy that the festival brings to both participants and visitors alike.
The newcomers from Ukraine supported the ETA efforts led by ETA President Wilma Ho and Vice-President Cherry Peng. Their involvement is an example of Edmonton’s inclusivity atmosphere that projects a welcoming embrace for newcomers to Canada.
Wilma Ho and her team from the ETA played a crucial role in integrating the Ukrainian volunteers into the festival's activities. Together, they contributed to various aspects of the festival, from organizing cultural performances to facilitating engaging activities for Edmontonians. Their collective efforts showcased the beauty of their traditions and highlighted the spirit of unity among Edmonton's diverse communities. ETA President, Wilma Ho, provided this insight while providing commentary for Global National News,
“It’s an honor to see our traditions come alive and to connect with so many people who appreciate the rich diversity of our cultures. This festival isn’t just about showcasing our heritage; it’s about celebrating the unity and understanding that makes Edmonton so special.”
The Edmonton Heritage Festival's success reminded us of the power of community collaboration. The combined efforts of RPOU-W & 1 CMBG volunteers and the newcomers from Ukraine, alongside the members of ETA, premised the festival's mission of fostering cultural understanding and celebrating diversity.
