Our Last Post feature aims to notify colleagues of the passing of a comrade and to publish a short summary of their career and accomplishments to honour those who have served our country who died after 1 January 2000. As we receive news of the death of a member of the CME Family, we post an obituary along with funeral details and family wishes. We have done our best to ensure their completeness, with a focus on each person's service records and notable accomplishments.

Lt John Elgin Reesor, MC, PhD

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant John Elgin Reesor, MC, PhD surrounded by his family on 3 March 2006 at the Ottawa Heart Institute.
John was born in Saskatoon where his father was an insurance salesman. The family moved to Michigan in the early 1920s but later returned to Canada and settled in Pouce Coupe, British Columbia in 1931. John’s brothers and sister were born while the family was living in Lapeer, Michigan.
John was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. While serving with the 4th Field Company in Italy, John was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery during a river crossing operation in northern Italy in December 1944. After the war, John reunited with his family who at this time was living in North Vancouver BC. He entered the University of British Columbia and graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering in 1949. He then received a PhD from Princeton University and moved to Ottawa in 1952 where he joined the Geological Survey of Canada. 
John conducted extensive surveys in the mountains of BC before becoming Chief of the Regional and Economic Geology Division in Ottawa.  From there he led teams to the Arctic to create some of the first topographical maps of the area. He was judged to be an excellent scientist and administrator and was universally admired and liked by his colleagues. He published many many books over his career.  
Memorial visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes in Ottawa on 9 March from 1 to 3 PM. A service in celebration of John's life will follow in the chapel at 3:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Note: John’s brother P/O Robert Dunham Reesor, was a Spitfire pilot in 401 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. He was killed in 1942 at 19 years of age.

Howard "Hurley" Chaisson

We regret to advise of the death of Howard "Hurley" Chaisson, formerly of Reserve Mines, NS, on 2 March 2006, in Glace Bay Healthcare Complex at the age of 90 years.

Hurley was a Second World War veteran who served overseas with the 1st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers from 1939 to 1945. While fighting in Italy, he was invalided back to England and returned to battle in France with another Sapper unit.

After the war, Hurley was employed as a pipefitter at the Point Edward Naval Base. He took an active part in his church and community He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines and served on several committees in the Parish. Hurley was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 2 and served as president and a board member of the Reserve Mines Credit Union. Over the years he and his late wife, Bernadette, welcomed many foster children into their home through the Antigonish Diocesean Charities.

Funeral will be at 11:00 AM, Monday 6 March 2006 in St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines. Burial in the parish cemetery. [zpp]

Spr Kenneth “Ken” Harold Bishop, MiD (Ret’d)

 We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Kenneth “Ken” Harold Bishop MiD (Ret’d) on 1 March 2006 at the West Haldimand Hospital in Hagersville, ON at the age of 81 years.

Ken was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was Mentioned in Dispatches as per Canada Gazette and CARO/6074, both dated 22 September 1945. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #154 in Caledonia, ON.

CWO Leslie H. “Les” Duguid, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Leslie H. “Les” Duguid, CD (Ret’d) peacefully on 27 February 2006 in Kelowna, BC at the age of 85 years.

Les was born in Quill Lake, SK and grew up on a nearby farm.  He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and served during the Second World War with the Royal Air Force Coastal Command as a Wireless Air Gunner officer, flying out of Gibraltar and England.  After the war, Les returned to Saskatchewan and farming again.  He re-joined the RCAF in 1948 as a Firefighter and eventually served as Station Fire Chief in Calgary, AB; Chatham NB; Soest, Germany; and North Bay, ON.  Les retired from the Air Force in 1976 as Air Command Chief Warrant Officer and moved to Kelowna.  He was a volunteer on the Rutland Citizens Patrol for ten years and an active member of the Rutland Parks Committee.

A Memorial Service will be held on 3 March at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna BC with interment to follow in the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation, 201-1456 St Paul Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 2E6. Spr Thomas Gordon Armstrong (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Thomas Gordon Armstrong (Ret'd) on February 20, 2006 at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, ON in his 95th year.

Thomas was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a long-time member of the the Royal Canadian Legion Long Branch # 101 in Toronto, ON.

Visitation will take place at the G.H. Hogle Funeral Homes Wignall Chapel, 62 Long Branch Avenue, Etobicoke, ON on 22 February from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. A Royal Canadian Legion Honours ceremony will take place at 7:30 PM.  The funeral service will take place on in the chapel on 23 February at 11:00 with interment at Glendale Memorial Gardens, Toronto.

Sapper Thomas Gordon Armstrong (Ret'd)

Norman Ralph Anderson

We regret to advise of the death of Norman Ralph Anderson on 16 February 2006 at home in Lambton Shores, ON at the age of 84 years.

Norm was born in Ochre River, MB.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and was mining in Malartic, QC when he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in Noranda, QC in 1941.  He fought through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany and was demobilized in 1945.

After the war, Norm returned to mining for a while but in 1950 moved to Sarnia, ON and started working in the insulation business. He eventually purchased his own company, Commercial and Industrial Insulation, which he owned from 1976 until 1982.  In 1958, he developed the Forest Golf and Country Hotel in Lambton Shores which he owned until 1989 when he retired.  He soon came out of retirement and with his son purchased and developed the Bonny Doon Golf & Country Club near Sarnia.  Norm was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #176 in Forest, ON, and a Lifetime Member of the Forest Curling Club.

Visitation will be on 19 February at the Ronn E. Dodge Funeral Home in Lambton Shores.  There will be a Legion Parade that evening at 6: 45 PM.  The funeral service will be held 20 February at 11: 00 AM at Forest United Church and interment in the Beechwood Cemetery in Forest will follow.  Donations may be made to the Sarnia-Lambton Community Care Access Centre.  {dcNov17gd} [zsd, zsp]

Norman Ralph Anderson

John George Warren

We regret to advise of the death of John George Warren at the Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC on 5 February 2006 at the age of 89 years. John was a veteran of both WW II and the Korean War.

John was born in Nova Scotia. He joined the Army in 1938 and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. during the Second World War. After the war he re-enlited in the Canadian Army Permanent Force. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served with 57th Field Squadron (1951 - 52). John later served with 4 Field Squadron in Germany and retired fom the Canadian Forces in 1967. He then began working for the Surrey School Board as a janitor at Earl Marriott High School until 1980 when he retired again.

A Service will be held at the Star of the Sea in White Rock on 9 February 2006.  A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion #8. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the White Rock Hospice Society. {jpMar17dc}[zpp]

Spr Edmond E. Croteau (Ret'd / ret)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Edmond E. Croteau (Ret’d) at Foyer du Lac-Noir in Thetford Mines, QC on 28 January 2006 in his 91st year.

Edmond served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War.  He was a member to the Royal Canadian Legion Thetford Mines Branch.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Alphé Drapeau (Ret’d) from Dalhousie, NB on 26 January 2006.

Spr Emery J. Alphonse Brouillette (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Emery J. Alphonse Brouillette (Ret’d) peacefully on 21 January 2006 at the Rainy River Health Center, Rainy River, ON at the age of 93 years.

Alphonse was born in Sprague, MB. He joined the Canadian National Railway in 1928 at the age of 16 and worked for them until his retirement in 1970. He was a veteran of the Second World War, joining the Army in Winnipeg, MB in 1941. He served overseas with the 20th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in England, France and Germany. His brothers Arthur, Paul and Alex also served overseas in the Army. After demobilisation, Alphonse moved to Rainy River, ON where he resided until he died. Alphonse was a Lifetime Member of the Rainy River Legion Branch #54 who received his ‘50 Year’ Legion pin in 2004.

A vigil prayer service will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Rainy River on 2 June from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. A memorial mass will be held the following day at 10:30 AM. A private interment will take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, with an Honour Guard provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54. Spr Elmer F. Dufton (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Elmer F. Dufton (Ret’d) on 17 January 2006 at Parkwood Hospital in London, ON at the age of 90 years.

Elmer was a proud Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Victory Branch #317 in London.

The family will receive friends between 2:00 – 4:00 PM and  between 7:00 – 9:00 PM on 20 September at the A. Millard George Funeral Home.  A Legion service will be held in the chapel at 7:00 PM. Elmer’s funeral will be in the chapel on 21 January at 1:00 PM with interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, London.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario. We regret to advise the death of Lance-Corporal Paul E. Deslauriers (Ret’d) on 3 January 2006 at the Victoria Hospital in London ON at the age of 73 years.

Paul served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Victory Branch #317 in London.

Spr Howard Ivan “Smiling Ivan” Dorey (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Howard Ivan “Smiling Ivan” Dorey (Ret’d) of Liverpool, NS on 1 January 2006 at the age of 79 years.

Howard was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War and served from 1943 until 1945.  During the war, he took part in many performances entertaining the troops.

After the war, Howard embarked on a successful career in the music industry that took him to Kirkland Lake and Orillia, ON, Montreal, QC and back to Nova Scotia.  He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Howard was also a lifetime member of the Friends of Hank Snow Society and served on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Mersey Branch in Liverpool.

We regret to advise of the death of Waldemar “Waldie” Jaquish of Airdrie, AB at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, AB on 28 December 2005 at the age of 94 years.

Born in Calgary and raised in Priddis, Waldie joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1940 and served with the 10th Field Squadron in Canada, England, Italy and Holland.  Waldie’s brother Donald* also served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Second World War.  Waldie was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 in Calgary.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 903 - 75 Avenue S.W., in Calgary on 5 January 2006 at 2:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, a donation in Waldie's memory may be made to the Beverly Care Centre 1729 - 90 Avenue S.W., Calgary, or to a charity of one’s choice. {dcMar2018gd} [zcc, zpp]

We regret to advise of the death of Edmond Raymond “Eddy” Greffe of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu QC on 27 December 2005 at the age of 81 years.

Eddy was born in Montreal QC. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Richilieu Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in St-Jean-sur-Richilieu.

Eddy’s family has opened visitation at the LeSieur & Frère Funeral Complex on Friday 30 December 30 from 2 until 5 PM and from 7 until 8 PM and on Saturday 3 December from 9 AM followed by a celebration in the church of Saint-Luc at 11 AM. Donations to the Haut-Richelieu Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper William Gray "Bill" Wardrope (Ret’d) of Hamilton, ON on 26 December 2005, at the age of 89 years. Bill was a veteran of World War II who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was an employee of Westinghouse and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Hamilton Branch 163.

Arnold Degelman

We regret to advise of the death of Arnold Degelman of Cambridge, ON at the age of 86 years on 21 December 2005.

Arnold was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Preston Branch #126 in Cambridge.

Spr Raoul Albert (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Raoul Albert (Ret’d) at the Edmonston, NB Regional Hospital on 14 December 2005 at the age of 82 years.

Raoul was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25, Edmonston.

Visitation will take place at the J.B. Côte and Sons Ltd Funeral Home, 160 rue de l’Eglise in Edmonston on 16 December at 2:00 to 4:00 and  7:00 to 9:00 PM and 17 December 9:00 to 11:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Edmundston, NB.  Donations may be made to the Georges-L. Lt Robert “Bob” Frederick Horwood (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Robert “Bob” Frederick Horwood (Ret’d) peacefully in hospital in Ottawa ON on 14 December 2005 at the age of 91.

Bob was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers, taking part in the Italian campaign with 9th Field Park Company and receiving the Commander-in-Chief's Certificate from Field Marshall Montgomery.

Born in Newfoundland, Bob studied architecture at the University of Liverpool, England.  Upon graduating he returned to Newfoundland where he worked for a time in the family's Horwood Lumber Company in Horwood, NL before moving to St. John's, NL where he practised architecture until his retirement in 1976.  In 1981 he moved to Ottawa. 

A memorial service will be held in Ottawa on 6 January 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road with interment to follow.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1745 Woodward Drive, Ottawa, ON, K2C 0P9.  {gdNov2016kh} [zpp]

Sam H. Brickman

We regret to advise of the death of Sam H. Brickman peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, MB on 1 December 2005 at the age of 89 years.

Sam was born and raised in Winnipeg and graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate.  He was a Second World War veteran who served overseas for five years with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After demobilization, he enrolled in the University of Manitoba where he graduated in Pharmacy in the Class of 1950. He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company and then ventured on his own to own Talbot Drugs. Next, Sam increased his entrepreneurship by becoming the owner of Brickman's Pharmacy.  He retired from his own business only to come out of retirement and work for White Cross Pharmacy and Shoppers Drug Marts.  He decided to retire again only to challenge a new adventure by successfully completing the Ontario Pharmacy exams and have another successful career with Big V Pharmacies in Tilbury, ON.  Sam finally retired back to Winnipeg in 1988.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Fort Garry Branch #90 in Winnipeg.

Funeral services will be held at the Chesed Shel Emes Chapel, 1023 Main Street, Winnipeg on 4 December at 12:30.  Interment will follow at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg.  {gdFeb2017dc} [zsd, zsp]

Sam H. Brickman

Spr Michael “Mike” Dell Sr (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Michael “Mike” Dell Sr (Ret’d) of Winnipeg on 15 November 2005 at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, MB at the age of 80 years.

Mike was born in Gimli, MB.  He was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War.  After the war he worked for the Department of National Defence for 30 years in Winnipeg until his retirement in December 1985.  Mike was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ukrainian Veterans Branch #141 in Winnipeg.

Prayers will be said on 18 November at 7:00 PM at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg.  A funeral service will be held on 18 November at 10:30 AM, also at the chapel.  Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery. Spr Michael “Mike” Dell SR (Ret’d)

Maj Dennis Stephen Singer CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Dennis Stephen Singer CD (Ret’d) at the Moog & Friends Hospice House in Penticton, BC on 7 November 2005 at the age of 76 years.

Dennis was born in Winnipeg, MB and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1948 as a Sapper.  After completing his Sapper basic training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering he started what was to be a full and rewarding career as he was promoted through the ranks as a Non-Commissioned Officer, was Commissioned from the Ranks, and retired at the rank of Major.   

Dennis was posted to No 1 Radiation Detection Unit in Kingston, ON in 1951 where he was promoted to Sergeant. While in the unit he participated in the atomic bomb trials in Nevada and Australia and was also involved in the clean- up of radioactive spills after the nuclear accident in at the Chalk River Laboratories of Canada installation at Chalk River, ON

Dennis  was next posted to the North West Highway System (1960-62), followed by the Alberta Area “I Staff” in Lethbridge, AB where he was promoted to Warrant Officer, and he then earned an exchange posting with the Royal Engineers at the Royal School of Military Engineering in Chatham, England (1965-66). On returning to Canada, Dennis was Commissioned from the Ranks and served in Edmonton, AB as a Captain with “I Staff”(1962-66).  He was subsequently posted to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack (1969-71) where he was the Training Coordinator and also held the appointment of Honorary Aide-de-camp to the Lt Governor (1970 – 1971).

Dennis was then posted to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, ON in 1971 in the rank of Major, where he was on the staff of the Director of Engineers.  He finished his service with a posting to Canadian Forces Base Shilo, MB where he was posted in 1977 to the Provincial Warning Centre as a Provincial Warning Officer and where he also served as the Mayor of Shilo (1978-79).  After his retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1979, Dennis moved to Chilliwack where he worked as a realtor for four years.  Dennis was a member of the Masons and eventually became the Master of Mt. Zion Lodge #120 in Chilliwack as well as being a member of the Nooksack Lodge #105 in Nooksack WA, U.S.A.  In 1993 Dennis took his final retirement and moved to Penticton, BC.

A memorial service will be held on 12 November at 11:00 am from First Memorial/Penticton Funeral Chapel.  {gdApr2017dc}

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant William Arthur “Bill” Farquharson (Ret’d), a resident of Parkwood Hospital in London ON, on 2 November 2005 at the age of 87 years.

Bill served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War. He was a Life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Victory Branch #317 in London.

We regret to advise of the death of Major Claude R. Lemieux (Ret’d) at the Villa Marguerite in Ottawa ON on 28 October 2005 at the age of 84.

Claude was a WW II veteran who served as a Lieutenant with the Regiment de la Chaudière.  After the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers (Militia) and retired with the rank of Major.

An informal gathering will take place at the Beechwood Cemetery Hall, 280 Beechwood Avenue, on 5 November from 1 PM to 3 PM. Donations may be made to SCO Health Service Foundation, 43 Bruyère St, Ottawa or to the Canadian Cancer Society.  {gdSep2016kh}

Sgt Thomas Aloysius Burton, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Thomas Aloysius Burton (Ret’d) on 13 October 2005 in the Chilliwack General Hospital, Chilliwack BC.

Tom was born in Little Harbour, NL in 1939. He joined the Canadian Military Engineers and served as a Heavy Equipment Operator, retiring after 30 years with the rank of Sergeant. Tom retired in Chilliwack, BC and spent the remainder of his life working and living there.

A Guard of Honour Ceremony will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Vedder Crossing Branch #230, in Vedder Crossing, BC on 18 October 2005. A Coming Home Ceremony will be held on 8 July 2006 in Little Harbour, NL.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Dmytro “James” Feniuk (Ret'd) on 4 October 2005 at the St. Joseph's Residence in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 92 Years.

James was born in Sarto, MB to Ukrainian parents who had arrived in Canada about ten years earlier. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1943 to 1945. After his discharge, he spent the next 40 years as an owner-operator of a Winnipeg Taxi service. James was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Legion Branch #1451 in Winnipeg.

Sgt Roy Harold Barr (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Roy Harold Barr (Ret’d) of Hilden/Shubenacadie, NS in Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro, NS, on 5 September 2005 at the age of 90 years.

Harold was born in Mill Village, NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland.

After the war, Harold worked for the Canadian National Railways for several years as a section man, mostly in Shubenacadie and Milford Station, NS.  He was an active member of the Truro Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26.  

Visitation will take place at the Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on 8 September with a Royal Canadian Legion memorial service at 7:00 PM.  The funeral will take place at 2:00 PM on 9 September at the funeral home chapel.  Burial at Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village.  Donations may be made to the Colchester East Hants Hospital Foundation or Brookside Cemetery. {dcFeb2017gd} [zpp, zsd]

Leonard Joseph Arsenault

We regret to advise of the death of Leonard Joseph Arsenault peacefully at Ridgewood Veteran's Hospital in Saint John, NB on 2 September 2005. 

Leonard was born in Bouctouche, NB.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1939-1944.  Originally recruited into the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, he was transferred to the 3rd Field Company while in England.  Leonard was wounded during the campaign in Sicily and repatriated to Canada in 1944.  After the war he worked for many years as an ambulance driver for the Department of Veteran's Affairs Ridgewood Veteran's Hospital and also for the Workman's Compensation Board.

Visitation will take place at Castle Funeral Home Fallsview Chapel, 309 Lancaster Avenue, from 2:00 - 9:00 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 541 Milford Road, Saint John on 5 September at 11:00 AM with a reception following at the Dennis Morris Community Centre, Greenhead Road.  Private interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery Field of Honour. Sgt Maurice Bernard “Bernie” Burton (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Maurice Bernard “Bernie” Burton (Ret’d) of Glace Bay, NS on 2 September 2005 at the age of 91 years.

Bernie was born in Glace Bay. He attended St. Anne's School and later worked in the family bakery.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 until 1946. After demobilization he worked for the Dominion Coal Company and for Shaw & MacDonald Machine Shop in Glace Bay.  Bernie was a member of St. Anne's parish in Glace Bay and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1953 in Glace Bay.

Visitation will be held on 6 September from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at V.J. Herbert Leonard “Bert” Asher

We regret to advise of the death of Herbert Leonard “Bert” Asher peacefully, at the Selkirk, MB General Hospital on 31 August 2005 at the age of 78 years.

Bert was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.   After the war he worked primarily in the mechanical field and later joined the Corps of Commissionaires.  He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Selkirk Branch #42.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper George Walter Gustafson Sr (Ret'd) peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospice, Thunder Bay ON on 30 August 2005 at the age of 74.

George was born in Winnipeg MB.  He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and trained as a parachutist. After his military service, he worked as a high rigger during the Thunder Bay iron ore docks construction and later with Provincial Paper from where he retired in 1988 after 33 years of service.

George was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Port Arthur Branch #5 for the past 45 years. {gdJun2016kh}

Charles was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the 6th Field Park Company from 1941 until 1945 and saw action in Northwest Europe.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Valleyview, AB Branch #140.

Lt Lionel W Bourdeau, (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Lionel W Bourdeau, (Ret’d) of Ottawa ON on 27 August 2005 at the age of 85 years.

Lionel was born in Kingston ON. He was a veteran of the Second World War enlisting in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1939. In 1943, he left the Royal Canadian Engineers and served the rest of the war as an instructor at the Officers Training Centre and later as a Training Officer in the 6th Canadian Division until 1945. In civilian life, Lionel worked for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Friends may visit at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, on Thursday from 12:30 to 2 PM followed by a Celebration of Life in the Chapel at 2 PM. Cremation and interment will be at the Capital Memorial Gardens. In memoriam donations to the C.N.I.B. or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Spr Malcolm McCarthy Freeze (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Malcolm McCarthy Freeze (Ret’d) at the Saint John Regional Hospital on 22 August 2005 at the age of 83 years.

Malcolm was born in St John. He was working as a plumber when he enlisted during the Second World War.  Malcolm served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Belgium and Holland.  After the war, he was employed by the Canadian National Railway for 30 years.  He served as president of the Saint John Fusiliers Club for several years and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Portland Branch #64 in St. John.

At Malcolm's request, there will be no visitations or funeral service held.  A private interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens. The family would appreciate donations be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice. {dcJan19gd} [zpp, zbd]

Walter Edward Duncan

We regret to advise of the death of Walter E. Duncan of Carnduff, SK on 18 August 2005 at the age of 87 years.

Walter was born in Rosetown Sk. During the Second World War, he initially served in the Merchant Navy. In May 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in the 22nd and later the 20th Field Company, in Northwest Europe. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Carnduff Branch #216.

He is buried in the Carnduff Cemetery.

We regret to advise of the death of Patrick “Pat” Fadden in New Westminster, BC on 7 August 2005 at the age of 83 years.

Pat served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War. He enrolled in the Permanent Force after the war and served in Canada with postings across the country. Pat later became a pastor before retiring in the Abbotsford, BC area.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on 12 August at Maclure Road Cemetery in Abbotsford.  A Memorial Service will be held the next day at 2:00 PM at Heritage Alliance Church in Abbotsford. {dcOct17gd} [zsd, zpp]

Martin Randall "Macks" Hall

We regret to advise of the death of Martin Randall 'Macks' Hall on 3 August 2005 in Stoney Creek ON at age 87 years.

Macks was born in Sandy Point NL, the son of William and Cecilia Hall. The family moved to Nova Scotia when he was an infant and he grew up in Lakeside and Seabright in Halifax County. In early 1939, Macks left Halifax to join a steam of young men known as the “Halifax 100”, who left Canada to join the British Armed Forces between 1937 and 1939, largely to escape crippling unemployment in Halifax at the time. Most of the Halifax 100 joined 2nd Battalion, The Manchester Regiment under an initiative started by Colonel Robert Willis, DSO, a Royal Canadian Regiment veteran of the South African War who later served with the Manchester Regiment.  The 2nd Battalion deployed to France as the Machine Gun Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division, British Expeditionary Force in 1939. They formed part of the rear-guard force that held off the German forces outside of the beaches at Dunkirk in May and June 1940. Macks was among the 300 men in the battalion lucky enough to have been evacuated from the beach. In 1941, Macks transferred to the Canadian Army and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and saw more action in Northwest Europe.

After the war, Macks was employed with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in the City of Halifax. He married Mary Allison Christie on 16 May 1947 in Lakeside. They had four children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Martin Randall 'Macks' Hall is buried in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Cemetery, Tantallon, NS.

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Earl Isador Berlin (Ret’d) peacefully at the Heritage Lodge Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, MB on 3 August 2005 at the age of 88 years.

Earl was a Second World War veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion General Monash Branch in Winnipeg.

Philip F McGuire

We regret to advise the death of Philip F. McGuire on 31 July 2005 at the age of 85 years.

Philip was born in Brant Township, ON and was a veteran of the Second World War.  He enlisted in the Army in August 1941 and served with the 12th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in England, Sicily, Italy, Netherlands and Germany. He was discharged on October 15, 1945. Philip was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #144 in Chesley, ON for 57 years.

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Cyril "Cy" Walsh CD (Ret'd) on 28 July 2005 in Chilliwack BC, at the age of 74 years.

Cyril was born in Halifax, NS and served 24 years in the Royal Canadian Engineers and Canadian Military Engineers as a Field Engineer. After retirement, Cy worked for Fisheries and Oceans Canada for 13 years and then worked in rental property management.

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant Leonard “Len” Leslie Williams (Ret’d) at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Care Centre in Ottawa, ON on 21 July 2005 at the age of 83.

Len was born in Winnipeg MB.  He was a WW II veteran who joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1943 and served overseas with both 4 Canadian Field Survey Company and 1 Canadian Field (Air) Survey Company.  After the war Len joined the Army Survey Establishment in Ottawa as a Photogrammetrist.  He left the ASE in 1965 to join IBM Canada where he worked for the next eleven years.

Siegfried was born in Lodz, Poland. He was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Chilliwack Branch #4.

Spr James Russell Farrell (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper James Russell Farrell (Ret'd) on 5 July 2005 at the Chilliwack General Hospital in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 68 years.

Jim was born in Elma County, ON.  He enlisted in the Canadian Army in January 1956 and, after his training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering at Camp Chilliwack, he remained there as a member of 3 Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers.  He played side drum in the 3 Field Squadron Band.  Jim was discharged in 1965 and then worked as a union carpenter until 1972 when he opened his own renovation and remodelling business.  In 1990 he worked as Maintenance Supervisor for the Thousand Trails resort at Cultus Lake until his health forced him into retirement. Jim was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party at Branch 6 in Chilliwack.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on 23 July at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chilliwack. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society for cancer research or to the Chilliwack Hospice Society. {dcApr2017gd}[zsd, zpi, zpp]

Cpl Raymond James Dionne (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Raymond James Dionne (Ret’d) of Point Edward ON at the age of 84 years on 1 July 2005.

Raymond was born in Sarnia ON.  He received his education at Our Lady of Mercy School and before enlisting, worked at the Holmes Foundry. He, his father and three brothers all served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War.  Raymond served in the Royal Canadian Engineers Italy and returned home in 1944.

Notes:

Raymond's father, an infantry veteran of the First World War, also served in the RCE. He was wounded during a bomber attack in England, was discharged and sent home to Canada in 1943. He died of his wounds a year later.

Raymond’s brother Robert died in action early in the Battle of the Scheldt while serving with the 11th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.  Robert was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre 1940 avec Palme by the Belgian government.  Another brother Ronald was in the infantry, landed on Juno Beach on D-Day and was wounded twice before returning home.
