Celebrating Excellence Awards – DM/CDS Regional Achievement Award – Safety Compliance Program RPOU(W)

Article by: Capt Kyle Ho, Real Property Operations Unit (West)

The Celebrating Excellence Awards (CEAs) represent one of the highest expressions of recognition within the Defence Team. This year, eighty[LW1] -seven military and civilian award recipients across DND received such honour for their outstanding performance. The ceremony was conducted in a hybrid format, with award recipients both attending virtually and in person. The Deputy Minister and Chief of the Defence Staff attended in person to mark the significance of the awards.

Real Property Operation (West) (RPOU (W)) compliance officers Nicole Warren and Marc Vandal were amongst the recipients recognized.  Nicole and Marc were recognized for their innovative program development skills which enabled coordination with key stakeholders. They led a national initiative within the parameters of the Safety Environment Management System  for the Western region. Ultimately, their leadership with the Safety Environment Management System was adopted as the standard at the national level. The team analyzed industry-standard practices and techniques used for investigating environmental incidences, with an emphasis on identifying  root causes and applying a non-bias approach. They developed a systems check to track unsatisfactory findings that were presented as a result of audits and inspections. This approach led to increased accountability, a reduction in  non-compliance, minimized material waste, and reduced environmental risk to personnel. Nicole and Marc are now providing guidance and coaching to conduct quality control and policy reviews at the detachment level, improving health and safety outcomes of our employees. Nicole and Marc had significant influence over the development of the contents of the Asbesto Awareness course which is  now  live on the DLN for all DND employees. The Asbestos Awareness Course is designed to provide awareness regarding the potential presence and identification of asbestos that may potentially be in   our facilities. Their influence goes beyond RPOU(W), as this nationally adopted course aims to serve a broader national audience.

As recipients of the regional achievement award, Nicole and Marc are exemplary figures in safety compliance. Their dedication, innovative approaches, and community engagement have elevated the standards within their organization and set a precedent for others. They have laid the foundation for a safer, more secure future for their colleagues. Let’s congratulate them both for their outstanding performance and their creativity.
