80 years for 9 Engineer Squadron - Rouyn-Noranda, QC

11 May 2021 - Rouyn-Noranda (QC) - National Defense / Canadian Armed Forces

34 Combat Engineer Regiment (34 RGC) will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Rouyn-Noranda Detachment, known as 9 Engineer Squadron (9EG), starting at 10:30 am, Saturday, 15 May 2021. For health reasons, dignitaries, former members, and the population of Abitibi-Témiscamingue will not be admitted to
the training sites. However, the celebrations will be broadcast via the Facebook page of the 34e Régiment du génie de combat Rouyn / 34 Combat Engineer Regiment Rouyn | Facebook.

At the start of the Second World War, Colonel C.E. Bent, who was the municipal engineer of Noranda at the time, formed a corps of special constables who would serve to help the regional police forces defend the city against possible gold theft, acts of sabotage, and revolts. In January 1940, Ottawa finally agreed to the Unit
becoming an integral part of the Canadian Army under the name of 3 Pioneer Battalion. In 1976, the Unit became Francophone and was called 9 Field Engineer Squadron. In May 1989, 9 EG acquired the former Rouyn post office at 97 Perreault East Street and made it its new armory. In 1990, ten reservists from 9EG
and twelve combat engineers from 5 RGC built a suspended footbridge in Aiguebelle National Park named The UBIQUE Pedestrian Footbridge.

Throughout the celebrations, health measures will be enforced to ensure the safety of the participants. For any concerns, please contact the operations of 34 Combat Engineer Regiment, Rouyn-Noranda Detachment. 2021 will be a pivotal year for the 9EG and a meeting with the military history of Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
We look forward to seeing you virtually during this milestone event.
