We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Robert “Bob” Robitaille, CD (Ret’d) in Toronto on 7 August 2021 at the age of 66 years. Bob served in the Canadian Forces for 24 years as an Infantryman and then an Electrician.
Bob was born in Winnipeg MB and joined the Canadian Forces in 1972 in Winnipeg at age 17. After he completed basic Infantry training at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown NB, Bob was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg. He was posted next to Germany in 1975. Bob served in Baden-Solingen Germany first with 3 Mechanized Commando and he was then re-badged to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. On 13 March 1978, when he was in Mortar Platoon, an explosion on the gun line in Munster resulted in the death of two platoon members and several other soldiers being wounded. Bob's quick actions in extinguishing the resulting fire in the ammunition stocks prevented an even worse catastrophe.
Bob returned to Canada in 1979 to Kingston ON where he re-mustered to the Electrician trade in 1980 and joined the Canadian Military Engineers. As an Electrician, Bob had postings to Winnipeg MB, Edmonton AB, Moose Jaw SK, Holberg BC, North Bay ON and Petawawa ON where he took release from the Canadian Forces in 1996. During his career, Bob also deployed to Cyprus, the Golan Heights, Bosnia and Canadian Forces Station Alert.
Bob moved to Toronto after retiring from the CF in order to be close to his family and he worked as an industrial electrician and with the Corps of Commissionaires until he finally retired for good.
Visitation will be on Saturday, 7 August 2021 from 2:00pm - 3:30pm at the Ward Funeral Home, "Weston Chapel" (2035 Weston Road, Toronto). Please RSVP for his visitation in order to follow COVID measures. A private family funeral service will he held. Donations to the Aphasia Institute would be greatly appreciated.
