Afghanistan Interpreters in Fear

When Canadian troops served in Afghanistan, they didn't do it alone, Afghan interpreters served by their side, they helped connect soldiers with local leaders and build trust. They risked their lives to do that work. Now, with the United States and other NATO allies withdrawing their soldiers, the translators are feeling more vulnerable than ever. The Taliban know who they are and they're hunting them down. Advocates for the translators from around the world are calling on governments, including Canada's, to fast track visa applications, which would allow them and their families to resettle outside of Afghanistan.

Lorsque les troupes canadiennes ont servi en Afghanistan, elles ne l'ont pas fait seules, les interprètes afghans ont servi à leurs côtés, elles ont aidé à mettre les soldats en contact avec les dirigeants locaux et à établir la confiance. Ils ont risqué leur vie pour faire ce travail. Maintenant, alors que les États-Unis et d'autres alliés de l'OTAN retirent leurs soldats, les traducteurs se sentent plus vulnérables que jamais. Les talibans savent qui ils sont et ils les traquent. Les défenseurs des traducteurs du monde entier demandent aux gouvernements, y compris celui du Canada, d'accélérer les demandes de visa, ce qui leur permettrait, ainsi qu'à leurs familles, de se réinstaller à l'extérieur de l'Afghanistan.

We Need Your Help

The office of MP Marcus Powlowski (Thunder Bay-Rainy River) has been reaching out to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and worked with Afghan interpreters. We hope to get in touch with the following men and women so that they can attest to the interpreters’ employment. We are building files on these interpreters for the Ministry of Immigration in hopes of getting them into Canada.
